David’s story is such an inspiring example of perseverance and the power of mentorship. It’s fascinating how his original dream of being a game warden led him to a completely different career path. The rejection from the Slade School of Fine Art must have been a hard blow, but sometimes those kinds of setbacks actually push people into the right direction, like it did for him with Robin Goodwin.
His first wildlife painting being commissioned by the RAF must have felt like a dream come true. The fact that the painting was of a rhino on a runway is particularly striking—it’s almost as if his two worlds (aviation and wildlife) collided in a perfect moment. It’s impressive how he combined his passion for wildlife with the opportunities the Armed Services provided, and it clearly set the stage for his future success.
What do you think drew him to wildlife art specifically? Was it his early fascination with nature or just a lucky coincidence that his first wildlife commission was from the RAF?
