As a child, David dreamed of becoming a game warden, and in 1949 he traveled to Kenya to pursue this passion. However, he was rejected and returned to the UK discouraged. Faced with limited options—driving buses or starving as an artist—he applied to the Slade School of Fine Art, only to be told he had "no talent whatsoever."
A fortunate meeting with artist Robin Goodwin changed his life. Goodwin mentored David for three years, laying the foundation for his future success. David began as an aviation artist, receiving commissions from the Armed Services, which took him worldwide. A key moment came in 1960, when the RAF flew him to Kenya, where he painted his first wildlife scene—a rhino on a runway. This commission marked a turning point, launching his career as a celebrated wildlife artist.
